Consultation

Consultation may be recommended when a parent is uncertain as to whether or not a child actually needs a full evaluation or services or when weekly therapy is not feasible. During a consultation a therapist will typically observe a child in the desired setting, which may be the clinic, home or school. Following that recommendations are made.

Home program: when a home program is recommended periodic consultation is usually desirable to monitor the program and assess results.

School consultation: A school visit may be recommended when teachers need more direct information to assist a child in performing to his/her maximum. Frequently, it is valuable for a teacher to understand the sensory based needs related to a child's performance to create realistic expectations. A school visit may reveal that a desk is too high or too low for efficient hand writing. In some situations adaptive equipment such as a slant board for writing or special pencil grip may be recommended to make the writing process easier. Special inconspicuous seating devices may offer the support necessary to allow a child to sit at a desk for longer periods of time. In other situations the therapist may recommend strategies to increase attention in the classroom.
