Home Programs
To further enhance
the effects of therapy the therapist may design a home program to
provide carry over at home and school. Activities may be created
to be carried out under the direction of parents or caregivers.
These activities are typically ones that can be easily incorporated
into demanding schedules and become part of the routine of daily
life.
More extensive
home programs may be designed for children who are unable to receive
ongoing direct therapy.
For a child
whose primary concerns have to do with difficulty regulating sensory
information, the occupational therapist may design a "sensory
diet" to be used at home and/or school. This plan is created
to dampen the impact of noxious stimuli. Strategies are implemented
to increase the individual child's awareness of the times when he/she
may become overstimulated, feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed by
incoming stimuli. This is the first step toward enabling a child
to respond to uncomfortable situations more appropriately.
